Callicarpa bodinieri | Beauty Berry

Grown for its clusters of spectacular berries that grace this lovely plant from autumn into winter, Beautyberry as it is also known is a deciduous shrub with cuttable upright stems that bear clusters of small inconspicuous flowers in violet pinky shades which are loved by bees and butterflies that are followed by clusters of bright glossy magenta coloured berries - a favourite of florists for arrangements.

These showy berries are also loved by birds and standout after the plants have lost their leaves going into winter.  A quick grower that forms an open habit. Grows best in full sun to part shade in medium moisture well drained soils.  If planted in too much shade it will become leggy.  Drought tolerant once established.
Whilst this plant is cold hardy, in areas that have very cold winters it may die back to the ground with new growth emerging from the roots in spring.

A great specimen plant or at the back of the border. The best fruit production occurs when these shrubs are planted in groups or massed for better cross pollination.  Plants flower on new growth.  You can prune stems back to 30cm above the ground in late winter to early spring which will encourage a more compact growth habit.
