Aster alpinus | Goliath

Asters belong to the Asteraceae family which also includes achilleas (yarrow) chrysanthemums and sunflowers. The Aster genus contains over 600 species and thousands of hybrids.

Aster alpinus 'Goliath' is also known as an alpine daisy. This is a low growing, herbaceous perennial that will clump up over time. The flowers are single purple blue daisies with yellow centres that will flower right through from early summer to autumn. Foliage is lovely green.

A lovely plant to attract butterflies to your garden and one of the things we love about it, is that being rural, rabbits do not eat them!

Goliath will thrive in full sun or will cope with some partial shade and enjoys medium moisture levels. Plants are drought tolerant once established.

A good choice for a coastal garden, cottage garden, perennial border and of course a must if you are wanting to create a butterfly garden.

Plants should be split every few years to maintain flowering vigour and this is easily done in spring - division will also help to keep your plants more bushy.  Cut back to the ground in late autumn.

Asters are also highly valued as a cut flower so a lovely ingredient to your cutting garden.
